Original Creation On A Miniature Scale
Hey,
I want to share a quote that has been sitting with me all week,
“There is something in the work of the artist which is akin to that of original creation. His work, literary, musical, or graphic is original creation on a miniature scale, and in this it differs from that of the engineer, which is constructive, or that of the scientist which is analytical; for the artist in a sense creates something out of nothing, and therefore starts from the stand-point of simple feeling, and not from that of a pre-existing necessity.”
– Thomas Troward
Troward wrote that over a century before ChatGPT.
Yet he answered the AI question before it was ever asked.
Everyone wants to know if AI will replace human creativity.
Let me tell you where I stand, because I have more skin in this game than almost anyone you know.
I have built channels with hundreds of millions of views, and AI touches nearly every part of that operation.
I am not a luddite writing this on a typewriter.
I use these tools daily, and they are far more powerful than the average person realises.
So believe me when I say this:
The machine is all cooking and no food.
Go back to Troward’s distinction.
The engineer is constructive. He arranges what already exists.
The scientist is analytical. He studies what already exists.
AI is both of these at superhuman scale, and neither of them is creation.
Every single thing a machine produces is a rearrangement of what has already been.
It starts, as Troward says, from pre-existing necessity.
The artist starts from somewhere else entirely.
He starts from simple feeling.
And feeling is not data.
Feeling is the point where the individual mind touches First Cause, where something genuinely enters the world that was not here before.
Man is the only creature made in the image of the Creator, which means man is the only creature on this earth who can initiate a cause rather than extend one.
That is what “out of nothing” means.
Not a magic trick. A starting point that exists prior to all material.
This week I ran an experiment on myself.
I fed my articles to Claude and had it write emails in my voice.
I’ll be honest with you, the imitation was uncomfortably good.
The sentences were cleaner than mine. The structure was tighter than mine.
But reading it felt like looking at a wax figure of yourself.
Every piece it wrote was assembled from my past.
It could tell you what Isaac has said. It could not tell you what Isaac is about to say, because that hasn’t come down the wire yet.
The machine composes.
The artist receives.
And here is where this gets practical for you.
There is a flood of AI content coming that will make the last few years look quiet.
Millions of people with the same tools, the same prompts, producing the same rearrangements of the same past.
The price of cooking is collapsing to zero.
Which means the value of the food is about to go vertical.
The person who can receive an original impression, a genuine feeling, a real desire from beyond the data, will stand out like a lighthouse in that fog.
The people who should be worried about AI are the ones who were already imitating.
The machine just does their job cheaper.
But if you create from feeling, you are drawing from a well no machine has ever tasted.
The tools will keep getting better.
The question is whether there is anyone home behind your words.
Talk soon,
Isaac
P.S.
Have you ever created something that felt like it came through you rather than from you? Hit reply and tell me about it.
