The Art of Starting | Success Principles

Perfectionist or Procrastinator?

A lot of people hide their lack of results through the guise of being a perfectionist. They never finish anything or get past the start point due to their work not being ‘perfect’. Welcome to the real world, you can not possibly expect to be perfect at something the very first time you start it. The courageous one starts regardless of if he thinks he is 100% ready or not, because he understands only action moves this world.

Is Knowledge Power?

Some would say it is reckless to start something new without compiling all the relevant knowledge first. They are right, it is not wise to move into a new field without understanding it, however people tend to get stuck at this first stage. They think knowledge is power, they believe that the more knowledge they compile the greater they will be at their field. These people fail to understand that knowledge is only potential power, it gives you the potential to obtain real power only after action is applied.

Case Studies on Power

Lets take for example Lance, and Jamal two guys that want to improve their skills with women.

Lance

Lance recently learned about ‘The Game’, a book written by Neil Strauss that discusses his success in picking up women and rise as a pick up artist. Lance goes on Amazon and buys all the books on pick up that he can find, he joins the forums and talks about theory with other members. Lance learns hundreds of pick up lines, he remember what to do in different situations, and all the pick up methods of the masters. Lance keeps this up for three years before he feels that he is ready to go out and talk to real women. Once Lance goes out, to his astonishment he is terrified to approach women, he has never done it before! After a few hours of walking around he decides to use one of his lines that he has rehearsed hundreds of times. He walks up to a girl shaking and says “Are you a banana? Because I find you a-peeling“. The girl is terrified not because of Lances pick up line (which was awesome), but because of the way he carries himself, and she runs away. Lance is discouraged and goes home to learn more theory.

Jamal

Just like Lance Jamal has read ‘The Game’, however Jamal did not look up any other books or read the forums he dived right in. Jamal just like lance comes off as awkward and scares many girls off with his cheesy pick up lines, but through persistence gets better with women. Jamal is authentic when communicating with women because his mind is not clouded with hundreds of theories. He learns from his mistakes and improves quickly.

This is the night and day difference of; knowledge, and knowledge with action. Notice that you do not need a lot of knowledge to get started, the important thing is getting started . Jamal is more successful than Lance not because he is taller, darker or more handsome than Lance, but because he actually put himself out there! While Lance embraced the forums.

 JUST DO IT

Come on man! Just do it, you know you need to start so why not start now? You might not have all the pieces of the puzzle figured out, however don’t wait, work with what you have now. This is the great difference between those who are successful and those who are not. The successful are always doing something, while the losers are always complaining about something. Think of trying to learn Jiu Jitsu, do you wait until you have all the equipment, and have done your research on all the submission holds? Or do you rock up to a club and have your first roll with an instructor the day you decided to try it out? I hope it’s the latter. You need to be action oriented, always be thinking of what you can do NOW to get where you need to be. There is always something that can be done, and generally those who take action end up learning more than those who don’t. They learn the practical aspects of what needs to be done in this dynamic ever so changing world.

Be Smart About It

I am not saying to dive into everything with rudimentary knowledge, I am advising that you don’t fall into the knowledge trap. Do not use the need to understand everything as an excuse to not take action. Be smart about it, learn the things you need to learn before taking action, and trust that you will figure out the rest during the process.
